The DMXcat is great for troubleshooting while not having to get the console involved, or even taking the console out of the equation. While it can be used as a simple lighting console, it is not recommended for this use because it was not designed for it.

Testing a Light with the DMXCat

  • Address the dimmer pack or lighting fixture

If you're using multiple dimmer packs, you'll have to daisy chain them via DMX cable. If you do not know how to address the dimmer pack, review the article for Leprecon Dimmer Best practice would be to set the first dimmer pack to Address 001.

  • Patch in the DMXcat

This will be patched into the first DMX in on the daisy-chained row of dimmers. Basically replaces the line that would be running to the board or console.

  • Turn On DMXcat

Hold down the large button on the front of the DMXcat. A green light will turn on.

  • Make Sure the DMXcat Is Connected to Device Via BlueTooth

Open the DMXcatApp. at the bottom left of the app, it will either say disconnected or connected to "serial number of the specific DMXcat" If it says Disconnected, click on the word and it will search for it. If it is not connecting, make sure the DMXCat is on.

  • Click on DMX Controler icon

Once the DMXcat is connected to the device icons will appear on the home screen of the app. Since the DMXcat is mostly a troubleshooting tool, the dmx controller starts off showing you all the channels in the universe. you'll want to click on the 1 at the top a few times until you get down to the individual fader level of the controller

  • Test your Light

Depending on what you are testing, you may find it helpful to turn off the following settings.

  • In the home screen hit the settings button

Top right gear icon

  • Make sure the following are turned off
  • Clear DMX Levels On Exit
  • Home Position On Load
  • Home Position on Exit

This will make it so when you leave the app that dmx singals are still sending and will not turn off your lights or reset them. It will leave them at the value you last set them. In using the DMXcat this way, continually sending data to the device and dimmer pack, the DMXcat uses a lot more of its battery. if you are working all day in this way you should use AC power to power the DMXcat.
