Sliders
A slider is a device that allows you to move the camera smoothly. There is a wide range of manufacturers at very different price ranges. They are made in various different lengths anywhere from 2' to 6'.
Uses
Sliders are often times used because they can be easily mounted to a dolly, allowing for quick movement of the slider to new positions where you can then do small camera moves. You can also use them in conjunction with a dolly to correct or extend moves from the dolly grip. A common use for a slider is to hold an over the shoulder shot where you may have an actor who is constantly blocking the other actor. Using a slider can help you correct the shot to where you are out of the way of the actor. When used on a dolly they will also be used with monopods so that the ends of the slider can be quickly supported.
Sliders are much faster since you don't have to build the rails of a dana dolly and it is one solid piece that can be quickly moved into place with the hydraulic boom arm of the dolly.
They are less versatile though as they only have one length and that cannot be changed.
You can use them with ball adapters to adapt a mitchell plate to any size ball head.
Sliders are a bit more expensive, especially as you get into the nicer brands.
