Interviewing for a feature film is much different than interviewing for any other type of job. It's expected that you come with some sort of visual idea for the film ready to present. This can take many forms, but a sample can be viewed here: Nightmare Wakes:Oren Soffer

To prepare:

  • Read the script once for overall story, then read again to make notes on visual style.
  • Mark any questions you have about the story, characters motivations, relationships, etc.
  • Use reference libraries to pull references
  • Build visual document to present
  • Find potential issues in the script that can be solved with cinematography.

An example of this is jumping between similar locations during different time periods, can use different lighting styles to differentiate between them.

Understand the Script

What is the central conflict or problem that the main character(s) face?

What are the main character's goals and motivations?

How do the characters evolve or change throughout the story?

What is the setting or time period in which the story takes place? Does it play a significant role?

What is the tone or mood of the screenplay? Is it lighthearted, suspenseful, somber, etc.?

What is the theme or central message that the screenplay conveys?

Are there any symbolic or metaphorical elements in the story? If so, what do they represent?

How does the plot unfold? Are there any major turning points or twists?

What are the main obstacles or challenges the characters face in achieving their goals?

What is the resolution or outcome of the story? Does it provide closure?

Are there any significant subplots or secondary characters that contribute to the overall story?

What is the intended audience for the film? Does the story cater to any specific demographic?

Does the screenplay incorporate any unique or innovative storytelling techniques?

Are there any social or cultural commentaries embedded within the story?

How does the screenplay use dialogue, action, and visuals to convey its story and themes?

Answering these questions could help to give you visual ideas and directions for your pitch deck.

Interview

Some questions you can ask during the interview:

  • What drew you to making this film?
  • What would you say the main theme is of the film?
  • Do you like to make a shot list?
  • Do you find yourself to be a technical director or do you like just to talk generally?
  • Emphasize that you like to throw a lot of ideas out there and that ultimately its a collaboration. If they don't fit its just something that gets us closer to figuring out what does.

Resume

Some people may ask for a resume. Here is an example of one from Armando Salas.
