IP Ratings are often given out by manufacturers to give you an indicator of how a piece of equipment should be protected and handled while in use.
The numbers that follow IP each have a specific meaning. The first indicates the degree of protection from foreign bodies. The second defines the protection level that the enclosure has from various forms of moisture (drips, sprays, submersion etc).
Manufacturers should have their IP ratings listed on the datasheet for the lighting unit. You can easily find the IP rating by searching the model number and IP rating.
If the rating is zero there is no special protection.
