Arriving on time for work is one of the best skills that you can develop. No matter how well you develop your skills in other areas, if you are late, people often times will not give you a chance to make up for it elsewhere. These ideas are just suggestions and are not requirements, as your call time is the time you need to be at work, nothing earlier. The other benefit is usually productions will provide a breakfast 30 minutes before call time, so arriving early will give you free time to eat your breakfast.

Planning your Trip

  • The most important idea is to get there 30 minutes early. Its rare that you will actually be 30 minutes early, but by giving yourself this buffer, you might find that you always arrive before you are scheduled to start.
  • Use Google Maps or Waze to help you figure out when to leave. You can tell the app you would like to arrive at a specific time and it will take traffic into consideration and give you a range of when to leave.
  • Setting multiple alarms in 5-10 minute increments can be a good safeguard. This allows you to hit snooze or even cancel an alarm, and another one will still go off. The more alarms you add, the more difficult it will be for you to sleep through it.
  • Simplify your morning tasks, doing as many things the night before as you can - This will help you maximize the amount of sleep you are able to get.

Arriving at Work

Once you arrive at work early, you are under no obligation to actually work, but you can find a productive use of this time. Can even get there and sneak in a quick nap, read a book, catch up on emails, anything you like. Often times you might find it better to stay in your car until closer to your scheduled start time to prevent people from asking you to work. Don't work before you are scheduled to start.

The Sauna

This can be a very refreshing way to start your morning if its cold. Sit in your car with the heater on full blast for as long as you can take it, then when you get out you'll feel the crisp morning air. Its nice.
